avnettechgamesPhoenix, Ariz. — Avnet, Inc., a leading global technology distributor, has announced its spring virtual games competition. The virtual games — The Android App Challenge, the RedPrairie Supply Chain Challenge and the Geocache Scavenger Hunt — expand the breadth of the Avnet Tech Games by making the competition more accessible to students, said Avnet.

The global distributor says the competition prepares students for real-world experiences, potential internships and job opportunities, while offering thousands of dollars in new scholarships.

The Avnet Tech Games, hosted each April at the University of Advancing Technology in Tempe, Ariz., is an annual collegiate competition that challenges Arizona students to solve real-world problems with technology. Both the traditional competitive events and the virtual games require students to test their knowledge, creativity, decision-making, problem-solving and technical skills, said Avnet. Students can work in teams or independently on a national level.

The spring virtual games include:

  • Android App Challenge: Students develop a Google Android App using Google’s Android SDK and Open API.
  • RedPrairie Supply Chain Challenge: Students aim to maximize profits by managing assets (inventory, equipment and cash) within a virtual factory.
  • Geocache Scavenger Hunt: This event is open to Arizona students only. Teams will use a GPS unit and initial instructions to start the scavenger hunt while posting updates to their school’s Facebook and Twitter pages after solving each clue.

Registration for the Geocache Scavenger Hunt competition closes January 15th; the Android App Challenge registration closes on January 29th; and the RedPrairie Supply Chain Challenge registration closes on February 5th. Winning students may apply their scholarship to any accredited college in the U.S.
