saftlogoJacksonville, Fla. — Saft is planning to build a new lithium-ion (Li-ion) factory in Jacksonville, Florida, that will roughly generate 279 jobs in the area over the next six years, thanks to a $95 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The project is estimated to cost about $200 million.

The new high-volume manufacturing facility, located at Cecil Commerce Center, will build advanced Li-ion cells and batteries for military hybrid vehicles, aviation, smart-grid support, broadband back-up power and energy storage for renewable energy.

“Florida is stepping onto the world stage as a major marketplace for advanced energy technologies,” said Governor Charlie Crist, in a statement. “We are excited about Saft establishing their lithium-ion factory in Florida, and we look forward to their being a part of Florida’s renewable energy future.”

Construction is scheduled to some time over the next few months and be completed before the end of 2010.
